Fortunatly (for Sun?) there will still be a need for servers.
A lot (all?) of companies want full control of their data. or at least they want to know that their data is in good hands. This leads again to centralization of data, which leads to servers.
Hmm ... i´m not perfectly convinced. At first, when companies want full control of their data, why do they distribute notebooks to their employees ? And the problem of data control can be solved with strong cryptography ...
That's why the next logical steps are Sunrays (I'm working on it...
There are of course other aspects, like legal (eg. banking laws), that might set pressures on data control. It will be interesting, if cryptography will ever be fully trusted. Banks are physically destroying defective disks, instead of sending them back to the manufacturer. Let's see how this procedures will change, when on-disk encryption will be widespread. Banks are very conservative (good&bad). We don't want the NSA to sniff around, don't we? |
